Wyke welcomed Keighley Albion to towngate on Friday night and beat them 44-0

The black and whites started up hill and soon got the scoreboard ticking over when fullback James Waine filled up man of the match Brad Clarkson’s kick. The full back soon found himself in space when scrum half Gary Worley found him out wide. Wykes defensive effort was proving too much for the Keighley side and when they kicked early in the set Wingman Tevin Campbell collected and went the length of the pitch in touched. Clarkson added two of the 3 conversions to turn Wyke round 16-0 up. Again Wykes defence pounded the Keighley side backwards with props Charles Grocock and Luke Robinson shoeing the Keighley forwards no mercy. Some great approach play from Nathan Marchant saw him go close twice but off the second swift hands found Tevin Campbell one on one with his opposite number and the result was a second try for the burley wing man. Clarkson slotted over the extras from the touchline to make the score 22-0. Try a game Sam Kittsen was next to score when he found a gap to scurry over again Clarkson adding the extras. Clarkson then took his personal tally to 14 points when he first grabbed a try and then slotted over the 2 points. When captain James Cullen broke from his own half the large crowd knew there was only one outcome and he delivered by first stepping the fullback and then beating the winger to the line for a well deserved try. With Campbell taking a well deserved rest under 18 winger Lamech Superville was on the end of a planned scrum move to cross for his fourth of the season. Clarkson adding the extras to take his haul to 16 points. Arguably the biggest cheer came when innthe dying minutes of the game Keighley centre broke only to find 80 minute prop Charles Grocock chasing him and throwing him into touch by his collar. A fitting finish to the game that showed Wyke’s class in defence against the powerful Albion pack.

After the game coach Ian Wormald said “that was a solid performance tonight. Great to see some of the new pairings in the halves and out wide working well together. The forwards did exactly what we asked them to do and dominated another big pack. We definitely have room for improvement but with the enforced changes made tonight I’m very happy with what I saw. It was great to see the park so busy tonight especially with so many youngsters from our juniors watching it tells me the club is moving forward and the open age are leading from the front. I’m looking forward to the day off tomorrow where I’ll hopefully see the academy side go into joint top in the league”.
