Centre Calvin Barker returned to Wyke and scored a hatrick against a solid York Acorn side to keep Wyke unbeaten in their first 10 league games this season.

Wyke made the best possible start to the game when from their first set they scored, when stand-off Gary Worley put Alec Williams through a gap to score with 3 would be tacklers clinging to him. Things got even better for Wyke when a high kick was dropped by the York winger, allowing Centre Brad Peel to pounce. Scrum half Brad Clarkson was unable to add the extras to either try. With the Wyke pack handling the York pack in their own half, York got a lucky break when after been pegged back in their own 20 their kick was charged down only to fall into the hands of their full back who eventually scored despite a fantastic Jimmy Waine tackle. Wyke were in no mood to let their lead slip and from their next set Barker took full advantage of sloppy defence to score his first of the afternoon. Barker then doubled his tally after great work from man of the match prop Charles Grocock and the solid second row forward Nathan Marchant to score our wide, clarkson added the extras to both Barker tries to ensure Wyke turned around 20-4.
Wyke started the second half slowly and after Grocock and his opposite number were sent to the sin bin to calm both teams down the York side powered over out wide. The introduction of captain and Tallis man Jordan Payton after facial surgery proved to be a deciding factor in the game, when he found Clarkson on a perfect line to score untouched under the sticks and when he found Clarkson again the burley half back went 50 meters and found Tevin Campbell who after a juggling act found barker to send him racing in for his hatrick the game was sealed with 10 minutes left. York did score again after the referee rightfully sent Brad Peel to the sin bin for a professional foul with 9 minutes remaining. However the Wyke pack rallied and with Luke Robinson doing a fine job of ensureing the larger acorn pack went backwards the black and whites took the two points with a head fought 30-16 victory.
Coach Ian Wormald said after the game “it was a tricky day for us as we knew York would come with a good side after seeing what they had to offer over there. We could have done better in areas but this has shown me we can win tough and our pack should take the credit for today, with all of them standing up and beating their opposite numbers both in attack and defence. It was great to see both Calvin and Jordan back in the squad as well, they are both a massive part of what has been a good few years”.
