Wyke Academy have gone joint top after a comprehensive victory at Batley DMR.

Wyke started the game very well and went close 3 times with forwards Jonny Fawthrop and Aaron Priestley punching holes in the large Batley pack. However a dropped ball was kicked on for Batley to score against the run of play. After words of wisdom from coaches Scott and White the Wyke team soon went level after good approach play from veteran forward Barry McShera the ball went through both halfbacks hands to find Centre Jamie Kerr who first broke the line and the stepped his way through 3 would be tacklers to plant the call down for his first. Stand off Luke Delahunty added the extras. Again the Wyke pack were punching holes through Andy Naylor and Michael Wormald resulted in Callum Scott sneaking his way over from acting half. Again Delahunty adding the extras putting the score to 12-6 at half time. Wyke lost the outstanding Brett Gray at half time to an ongoing bowel issue. Wyke however continued to defend like trojans against the Burley pack with Scrum half Seth Whomack and Tevin Campbell leading the way. However when loose forward Brad Ellis made strong meters and Fullback Jack Porteus finding a bit of space the young halfback pairing of Whomack and Delahunty found Wormald in the centres to feed Cameron Foster for the try of the game, again Delahunty adding the extras. Wyke found themselves on the back foot for the next ten minutes as the Batley side rallied and when they did finally break the line, a spectacular ball and all tackle from fullback Porteus proved vital to maintaining the 18-6 lead. Young replacement hooker Conor Laverick then went close twice but was held up over the line. Again the powerful pack of Batley came st the young Wyke side and again in attack and defence Seth Whomack was showing the other 39 players how size and age are no match for desire and when him and Delahunty linked again to find Kerr the centre raced in for his brace. Batley did manage to score in the final minutes but The Academy side we’re too far in front for a comeback to put them joint top of the league.

Wyke Academy coach Cameron Scott had this to say - "That the attitude to defend again was outstanding, keep them to 2 scores at their ground was great. We’ve built some momentum in the past few weeks knock off some of top sides so moving forward we just need to keep going with that and maintain the same attitude to defend week in week out"
