Calvin Barker and Jordan Payton, both 18 years of age, have after trials with Keighley Cougars been selected to play for the Clubs ‘A’ team

Calvin Barker and Jordan Payton, both 18 years of age, have after trials with Keighley Cougars been selected to play for the Clubs ‘A’ team and are looking forward to locking horns with fellow hopefuls and seasoned professionals from other professional Clubs

Both players are products with Wyke Rugby Clubs youth development, Calvin started playing for Wyke under 8's team, and when as a 6 year old, he would combine both of his passions, when he would play football for HAFC and then swap the round ball for the oval ball and turn out for Wyke on Sunday mornings

Jordan came to Wyke as a fresh faced and eager to learn 8 year old, he soon became a valued member of the under 9's team, combining his passion to learn his trade with his desire to be the best

Both players had a were selected to train with the Bradford Bulls service area squad, but due to various issues, e.g. Jordan’s lack of size and Calvin still loving the game of Football, neither players fulfilled their potential

They continued to enjoy the Rugby League with Wyke and advanced through the age groups appearing and excelling in various games against both local and far opposition, indeed as under 17's the two lads helped the team become division two Champions with a victory on their travels in Scarborough

Both players achieved open age, 2nd team, selection at 16 years of age, Jordan, who is sponsored by A&G Autos of Hipperholme, is a prolific half back with the knack of making wonderful runs from acting half or finding that perfect pass to a fellow player, who would serge up the field or score a try.
Despite his size, he has also been a prolific tackler, always throwing his body into the ball and all tackle or under upsetting the big props with his trade mark steel of the ball, just as the opposition player thinks he is going to stride over him

Calvin, who is sponsored by City Training Services has played at various positions, whether it be centre or second row, but as he grow older he learnt that's probably his best position was full back, where he can destroy the opposition with his tremendous leg tackles or join the line at the right opportunity or he can retrieve a kick and exploit weaknesses in their defence with his pace.

More recently both players have progressed to the 1st team and again they have lived up to expectations and on many occasions taken the man of the match accolades with their magnificent performances

Wyke Rugby Club are very proud of the achievements of all its open age and junior players, but with these two we hope that both do themselves and the club proud with the same performances at Lawkholme Lane in a Keighley Cougars shirt
